Water for Elephants has two plots going on, both starring the same main character, Jacob. In one plot, Jacob is a young guy just starting out in the world; in the other, he's an old guy stuck at a nursing home. Every few chapters, the narrative switches from one Jacob to the other. This could get confusing. To make sure everything's clear, we're going to lay it all out for you separately.

Marlena tells Jacob she'll be okay, and he hides! She doesn't engage me or hold any allure. The roustabou? In addition to Jacob Jankowski's "love affair" with Rosie the elephant and a noticeably less sweet affair with Marlena-the-bland-chick we get a parallel story of?

Most unforgettably is a "Polish" elephant by the name of Rosie. That's nice - sitting alone at lunch can be kind of a drag. Animal lovers beware with this book. Jacob fir becomes friendly with the animal trainer, and his wife Marlena.
