Five books have already been published and he is working on the 6th right now. The 6th book is set to be called The Winds of Winter. The books are set in the fictional world of Westeros and Essos. The books start with a war between families, also called houses, for the control of the Iron Throne. Westeros is protected by a wall, which keeps the evils from beyond the wall from joining the war for the iron throne.
Martin's publishers initially expected A Game of Thrones to be a best-seller,  but the first installment did not even reach serirs lower positions in bestseller list. The characters you don't connect with you will not read. The way of narrating a story has certainly changed. November .

It's not that the author is trying to say that good people die, it's just that a lot of people really don't get what goes on. The real crucial point seriies with the third season with Storm of Swords. I would have to say that the world GRRM created is interesting. How can a planet have winters of decades that don't even follow a regular pattern.
