Financial times best books of the year 2018
Best business booksIf we had to use a single word to describe the past year in books, it might be eclectic. Novels were told from the perspective of a woman imprisoned for murder, a woman who suddenly inherits a Great Dane and a woman having an affair with a writer who strongly resembles Philip Roth. A note on methodology: The critics limit themselves in making these lists, each selecting only from those books they reviewed for The Times. For more of their thoughts about the year, including books they may not have reviewed themselves but still enjoyed, you can read their related roundtable discussion. The books that most stung my interest this year — six novels, two books of short stories, a memoir and a collection of criticism — are very different in terms of syntax and sentiment. But each implicates the reader deeply. Each delivers the sense of an especially sentient human being seeking to explain something that matters.
