Reading the best cookbooks is a bit like listening to a great radio programme — it somehow feels private and personal, despite being available to all and sundry. Often, though not always, it helps if they look good, too. After all, they are likely to be kicking about your kitchen for a while, as you dip in and out between cups of coffee, or leave them open at a recipe you want to make later that week.
